There’s a new club for D39C’s middle school students! Whether you’re advanced or you’re just starting out, there’s a place for you in Ms. Mika’s Drawing Club! For the first trimester of the school year (until November 18th), this club will meet on Fridays right after school in room B213.
Ms. Mika has been our School Psychologist for the last 2 years, and this year, she decided to form a Drawing Club for middle school students. She said she has had a passion for art ever since she was in middle school, and now she wants to be a mentor to young artists at D39C. She had tried starting a Drawing Club at her previous school and kids really enjoyed it.
Ms. Mika describes the atmosphere of her classroom as slightly structured with plenty of room for creativity. Each week, they focus on a different aspect of art, such as facial features, hands, and poses. Although it can get a little chaotic at times, all the kids have fun and are able to socialize with people that have similar interests. This club is a great way for students to build connections and explore a topic they love!
Ms. Mika first informed all of the students by creating a presentation and going from class to class telling all of the students about the club, giving them details on how to sign up. One member of the club, a 7th grader named Maya, said that she wanted to join because she has a passion for art and wanted to improve. Maya says that she enjoys art because of the final product of it as well as the artistic process. A 6th grade student named Sahaana says, “I love the creative freedom of drawing! It gives me a place to express myself.” Club members, Sahaana, Maya, Rohit, and Chris, hope to improve skills anywhere from character designs to backgrounds to perspective. Maya describes Ms. Mika as “very encouraging. Instead of giving negative comments she tells you how much she loves it and what she thinks you could add.” Anyone can join no matter experience or skills. It is a safe, inclusive place for students to create, share and improve their art!
